Cinco de Gato - Catamaran Race
Cinco de Gato - Saturday, May 2 RecapThank you everybody for coming out to play in the rough conditions. This was by a large margin the biggest CdG we have ever held with 17 boats. We had some tight racing in the spinnaker fleet. With a finish down to a matter of seconds. Second and third were split by about 55 seconds as well in the non Spin fleet. There were a few capsizes, and several boats called the race early. The conditions were big, coming off a gale warning ending at the start time. Winds were from the north east around 17-18 gusting into the 20's. Wave action was strong and growing throughout the morning, but diminishing throughout the day. Our course consisted of an out and back using 2 marks in the bay. We sailed from the club to the lower range for the outbound lane of the HSC. Then to the "House", the giant gas separation platform on the bay. We ran back upwind to the range, then finally turned for home. The beat to weather was quite a slog for some of the boats with 4.5 miles of some big gusts, and large chop all but stopping some boats dead in their tracks, to say it was bouncy was putting it lightly. It was interesting to watch the fleet split out into the bay or stick close to the shore and ride the lifts to windward. Leg two was a reprieve for some with an ofset broad reach. The spinnaker boats made quick work of this leg with speeds into the high teens. The non Spin boats looked in great condition headed down this leg and they showed good boat speed as well. Headed around the House started leg 3, a reverse of leg 2. By this time the chop had died some and the outbound range was closer to a windward leg. Rounding the range, brought thr fleet flying home with speeds reaching into the 20's for some of the boats. Line honors went to Green-Go with Chris and Amy followed shortly by Scott and Haleigh. And finally of course we ate tacos and drank beer as any good Texans would do in celebration of Cinco de MayoNon Spin class was as follows1) Alan Davis and Amy Modic with a corrected 1:392)Brayden Benitz at 1:553) Jamie Gaines at 1:564) Justin Simmons and Danelle Pecht 2:02:575) ACat6) Jeffrey Edward Davidson 2:147)Dane Kidd DNF8) Connor Riley DNF 9) Evan Walters DNF10) Michael Merritt DNF 11) Charles Reynolds DNFSpin fleet was1) Scott Tuma and Hayley Tuma at 1:43:472) Chris Holley and Amy Fischer, 1:44:153) Charles Carlisle 2:21:30Wave fleet 1) Jesse Gaines2) Joey Panozzo 3) Joe Birkofer 4) Ben HolleyCaptain Chris Holley713-213-8388
